Thank you, Erica! These are all great points, however I'm not sure I'm ready to hand over my tasks to someone else. I've heard that you can get someone fairly cheap though!

Heh Mita... That's because you're on the other side of the counter. Erica sees it from the outsourcer's perspective.

Erica is right here. If you're based in a country with high living costs (like myself: Australia) then you just can't compete on cost with workers from the Philippines on simple tasks, and it will feel like slave work if you try.

That is the virtues of globalisation and the free markets... Loss of simple jobs for workers in the developed world, new opportunities and growth for workers in third world countries, and gradual closing of the income gaps.

I've had excellent experience with outsourcing at odesk as well. I know some people see it as exploitation, but I have to agree with you that the contractors are the one bidding, and they bid enough for them to live on. Most countries in the world have a lower cost of living compared to the US, which is why they can afford to offer their services at lower rates.

Sorry to hide my details.
But here are some points that make at least some one's eye open.
Odesk or any other freelancing sites are paying nuts. Not a place for qualified person.
These sites hide customer details. Which is bad for business if you are still in dreams that you are doing business with clients. seriously It's not business at all.
It's good for part time worker's. But you can't pay your bills from the earning from these sites.

Their main game starts with rating system. Although cheaters already fooled this so called smart system. companies When tries to get some projects hire their own employees to set good rating for them. Innocent buyer get trapped with rating game. and finally this innocent buyer think what went wrong. and they starts writing no body from INDIA / PAKISTAN / Dakha / Philipins needs to apply. I never understand why buyers can't understand simple basic logic behind this rating system.

Another stupid concept by odesk itself. It's never designed around for serious project.Spying in the name of work guarantee is useless. This is really dumb idea why a data entry folk is allowed to see the screen's of admin working. They allow screen share in between the team. Who is this world if studied simple basic computing allows this stupid error?

Another stupid idea. Hiding customer details. Seller can't ask any questions before deciding weather he can deliver the project or not? Buyers have tendency " I will give details to some one qualified.." This is called " I KNOW SYNDROME" . When you reach doctor do you think doctor should predict why you are ill? Why you simply say I have this project Please apply with your quotation. In odesk Core designed is design around Typical employee employer relationship. It's certainly not a market place where you are raise a quote. and buyer can select what is the best quote and which works find for his end.
I know what I am saying. And don't know weather this post will be visible to end user or not. But truth are truth. odesk is just time pass. Not for business.
Last Just try to find odesk earning of any of the guy from odesk in a year. you will surprise to know the earning is far less then common s/w companies pays to their caretakers. Means they guy who bring coffee to your desk.and sweep the floor when you reach office.

Last truth from odesk itself. Read it's market data. Use your simple maths skills and try to find average time odesk work are employed. Just think Is it a wise idea to work in odesk ?? You decide yourself. btw i am quitting from odesk after wasting my precious 2 years for the cost of 2000 USD.

I think it's immoral and disgusting that Erica is "gloating" about paying Employees $7 per job for hours upon hours work. If the girl had any integrity and humanity, she would do the right thing and pay what the assignment is worth, regardless of what country the Employee is from... I wouldn't want to work for a selfish employee like that.

This is ridiculous. Newbies have to start somewhere. Are you telling me you wouldn't hire someone with a Master's degree in writing, for some of these entry-level, underpaying writing and editing jobs, because they don't have previous experience in freelancing? Yikes. Where are folks to get experience, if not for the entry-level crap jobs?

My experience with oDesk is great. Hourly jobs is an amazing feature by oDesk where it safeguards contractors against any such cases where they were not paid by the employers even after successful completion of the projects. It guarantees that every hour worked is also the hour paid for the contractors. At the same time it puts an extra responsibility on employers to regularly check their work diaries and progress of their projects to make sure that every hour paid is also the hour contributing to their overall success. There is a great analysis available here http://shozeb.blogspot.com/2011/08/career-resource-odesk.html but overall it's hourly jobs feature is amazing for contractors.
