Great article on identifying your niche. In any business, the narrower you make your niche the larger you can make your market.
I have a career blog that I started writing for the IT Career Seeker and it has gotten broader. Even with great content, I got away from what you are talking about so it becomes one of many other career sites..
Thanks for the timely article.

This is good advice, Erica. Kyeli and I named our person Amy. Amy is a lot like us at a younger age, too. It's neat when it ends up that way. It's kind of like the positive side of the usual error -- since you know yourself very well, you can predict what you would want. (:

Only two points, but they're so powerful! I can't believe this is the first time I've found your blog.

I love your Kiss of death point. So many companies use superfluous words like "industry leading", "leaders in innovation" and they ultimately mean nothing.

Just stumbled and submitted your site to Viralogy. Hope you get some great traffic from it.

This is powerful. If you're selling something technical on the web, you have to explain the product or service concisely. 10 years ago I worked at a job where we wanted to hire someone to do schematic-level design of power supplies. The hiring manager had someone in to interview. It took the manager and the candidate several minutes to work out that the manager wanted schematic-level power supply design and the candidate only provided physical PCB layout of power supplies. In technology, you have to be very clear about exactly what you're selling and looking to buy.

Your post warns against letting the legitimate need to explain exactly what you provide cause you to talk only about yourself. I like the idea of finding ways to provide that same detail about a product in the format of a client's story.

It reminds me of Thomas Stanley's line (borrowed from one of his subjects): Me, me, me is dull, dull, dull.

This is a very timely post for me as I am working my way through Gerry McGovern’s book “Killer Web Content”. One of the main messages in his book is defining personas for the people who will use your site and construct content with them in mind, even if they differ with your own persona. Having read your post this really emphasises this point even more.
