it's not a crime to change your mind. just say, "actually hold on, let me talk to my wife/husband/roommate about this first before we make it final." and then call back and say we'll cancel now. if they really don't offer you anything a second time, they're not doing their jobs right.

time warner in ny did not have any offers or retention packages to give me when i wanted to cancel and spoke to someone in retention. i was already getting a great deal according to them. the only offer i got was to ADD to my bill, showtime for $5. really? i'm trying to lower my bill and you think making me pay a reduced price for extra channels is the solution???

I'm not sure how to get a better deal with Time Warner Cable, if I'm already subscribed to Extended Cable, Sports Package, DVR, etc. :) If I say I can't afford it, they'll simply offer me a package without some of those perks!

Thanks!... Just reduced by Vonage bill to 9.99/month for as long as I stay with Vonage. Not a promotional offer(unlimited calling, includes Canada and Puerto Rico, plus Visual Voicemail)

I need to tell as many people as possible about this:

I've canceled my cable service.

AND

I still get to watch any channel I want!

Those two things can happen at the same time. I paid a one time fee and never have to pay the bill again. It's awesome. www.StopTheCableBill.info

Great advice. Everyone wants to save money, in fact that’s a big part of why I switched to DISH Network before I started working for them. Now that I’m on the other side of the phone I spend a lot of time trying to help people lower their bill, often times this means tweaking their programming to fit their needs better, or seeing what specials are available, other times bundling services is a good option. In any case, I’m here to help and I’m happy to do so, especially when people follow the advice in this article. Unfortunately I don’t get the feeling that our competitors try as hard, I hear horror stories all day long, especially about DirecTV. It almost seems like the only way to get fair treatment from DirecTV is to go to the media and cause a PR ‘fire’ like this gentleman had to do: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-10-04/business/ct-biz-1004-problem-dagosto-20111004_1_directv-customer-directv-spokesman-robert-mercer-directv-contract

What if you're loaded up with a DVR, premium channels etc? Wouldn't they just tell you to do away with some of those things?

Great tips. Any chance of this working for me when I'm thinking of changing from AT&T regional to nationwide to avoid roaming fees AND adding a line?

OK. So what is the best time of day to call (when using "cancel service" and "I can't afford it")?
thanks,
