I totally agree that a card that causes a conversation is critical.

I myself have wrote about how important it is to utilize your business card as more than just a peice of paper that holds contact information.
If your business card has impact and personality people will be more likely to keep it.

Ive seen some cards that focus solely on how thier cards looks though to the point that it becomes non-functional.

Gotta balance both function and style.

Erica,

I love this post. Your comments are spot on -- from thinking about your objectives before you create your card to the vitally important call to action.

Personally, I really like the one you put together... with one BUT. As in, BUT what's on the other side? This actually looks more like the back of a business card to me than a front.

That said, it's more engaging (and more functional) than most cards I see, so I'm a fan. Off to follow you on Twitter!

Best, Alan

Hi Erica -

Just visiting your site for the first time (found it through Ramit's, which I've been reading for a few years now).

I appreciated this article on business cards, because I'm not a designer and spent a lot of time designing mine. Fortunately, they turned out like I wanted them to (not so much memorable, but professional! Did I mention I designed them myself?)

I guess my question to you is - why is it so hard to find people with good design skills / know-how? When it comes to design, I am really picky about what I want. I don't care if it's fancy, but I expect it to be d--- good! Clean cut, professional. But I don't have the skills to do it myself. Shouldn't someone who calls themselves a designer know the basics of what looks good?

The problem may be that I'm trying to get professional work without paying top dollar for it. Or I'm not looking in the right places.

Anyway, some ideas would be appreciated, as well as any blogs or articles or resources for good design. I've been working with someone to redesign my website for about 6-12 mos. now and I'm ready to pull my hair out.

Thanks for writing!
Anthony

Why did your blog put my web site instead of my name in the previous comment? I've never seen that happen before. (and will it do it this time too?)

I love the idea of your new cards and think it works very well. That said, I think you can improve on the visual design to make your idea pop even more.

I've been using the cards from moo.com. They're oddly small, which has generated lots of comments.

I think on my next print I'll put my twitter on.

Hi Eir,

It's fortunate for you, then, that we'll probably never meet. ;) To each his own.

The first card looks really cheap and cheesy. My first impression was that you were trying to sell sun tanning appointments and plastic nails.

The second [numbered] card looks to me like part of an information pamphlet from the late 90's; the type you see in doctor offices/abortion clinics. I wouldn't even want to touch the card if it was handed to me.

Also, didn't Twitter start dying the first week into March? =/

Making and perfecting cards can be an art however and it's glad to see someone who's stressing on using cards as an informative marketing tool; rather than a boring contact list.

Just ran across this post and I love the idea of having a dynamic business card. I think using your twitter account as contact information is interesting. I am sure it works well with certain fields, but I wonder how it would be received by those unfamiliar with twitter. Perhaps it would spread the twitter gospel and give you an unique conversation starter. Hmmm. Love the idea!
