I could count on one finger the number of 16:9 HDTVs people I know personally owned: 1

You forgot me. I'd say I know you personally and I have owned a 42" 16:9 HDTV for a couple years. I bought it so Halo would look better. ;-) Though to be fair, when you were in ATL, I was in the apartment, so I hadn't brought it down from TN, so you didn't see it.

I made the same jump in December (to LCD rather than plasma, though, and to Sky - the UK version of DirecTV - from the increasingly lousy cable service). Their rebadged TiVo is a huge improvement for me, although sadly they seem to have removed Season Passes for some reason! The improved picture came as a surprise (I'd expected HDTV channels to be better, of course, but hadn't realised how big a difference moving to LCD made to the regular picture too). I have quite a few more channels, too; the cable company here is extremely slow to add new channels to the line-up, if they do so at all. Sadly, there is only a single 'local' channel, and even there the genuine local content amounts to no more than a few minutes each day.

My main reason for making the move was actually to escape the lousy cable modem service (packet loss somewhere in RFC1918-land, with DNS servers slow enough I could cut and paste entries into the hosts file faster - ah, the wonderful results of MS "investment" in an ISP!) - being a three-in-one bundle (phone+broadband+TV) made escaping them difficult, since the phone is compulsory with TV service and you can't get DSL over a cable phoneline. So, you have to switch TV first, then the phone line, at which point you can finally order DSL service...

Anyway, I hope you have a great time at your Superbowl party: it's being broadcast live in HD over here as well, but I didn't subscribe to that channel!
