I found your URL through WordPress Camp! I didn't know you were going. I signed up but then wasn't able to make it because I had to pick up my cat in LA.

Anyway, I've been super duper happy with your service and I'm glad to hear you are doing so well. I love the communication! That reminds me.. I'm going to put up a link to you from my netnerds.net blog.

This is a perfectly timed post. My 'other half' is about to hit the PR consultancy model, because she knows that she can do something she loves when the agency isn't killing her. This post will give her three things: the sanity check; confidence she can succeed; a great idea for a website theme - you have a nice eye for a clean looking blog.

Now all I have to do is build her site. Hey, maybe I'll host it too. And maybe I'll host my own. Oh, now there's an idea!

Cheers
Phil

Hi Josh,

What initial investment? I didn't take an investment to start Simpli. I did borrow $20,000 total ($15K + $5K later) from my parents in 2002 and threw that into Simpli. But you should be able to come up with those kinds of funds. I survived by not taking a salary from Simpli for 3 years and doing consulting to pay the bills. Now I take a very low salary -- just enough to pay the bills -- so Simpli can continue to grow.

I can't speak for all your clients, but I know *I* feel loved. ;-)

Don't forget point #1. Have the initial investment. Its usually risk vs reward, and you have points on coping with the risks. But the biggest issue I have is not having the initial investment to start...

One objection.

I don't think one must necessarily go into business in a field one's totally in love with. There must be passion, and there must be aptitude, but not necessarily love.

I think waiting for "love" to start a business creates a huge and uneccessary barrier. Some people don't have that spark, but are still capable of starting successful, strong, profitable businesses.

Otherwise, I'm in total agreement with you.
